Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose intensely expressive use of color and dynamic brushwork profoundly influenced 20th-century art. Despite producing over 2,000 artworks in a little over a decade, he achieved little commercial success during his lifetime and struggled with mental health. Born in the Netherlands, Van Gogh worked various jobs before dedicating himself to art in his late twenties. His time in France, particularly his periods in Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, proved to be his most artistically productive.
Van Gogh's paintings are characterized by their emotional intensity and bold application of paint, often using impasto to create textured surfaces. His subjects ranged from self-portraits and still lifes to landscapes and portraits of the people around him, all rendered with a deeply personal and often turbulent perspective. Iconic works like "Starry Night" and his sunflower series exemplify his unique ability to convey profound feeling through vibrant color and energetic mark-making. Though his life was marked by hardship, Van Gogh's artistic legacy continues to resonate deeply, admired for its raw honesty and powerful visual language.
